Zhong Zhi Yue is a sheng, guqin musician and composer, graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with a master’s degree. He is currently a sheng musician in SCO as well as a committee member in professional sheng instrument section of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society and a member of Shanghai Musicians Association.
He was under the tutelage of Xu Chao Ming from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to learn sheng techniques at a tender age of 11 years old. While he was in university, he was under the tutelage of Dai Xiao Lian, minor in guqin professional performing technique and learned music composition from Xu Jian Qiang. In 2006, he graduated a year earlier due to his outstanding academic results, with Sheng Bachelor’s Degree and Guqin Professional Diploma. At the same time, he was recommended to be a postgraduate studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 2009, he held a very successful graduation concert in Shanghai and has produced a live concert recording DVD by ROI Production Ltd, Hong Kong.
He has performed in many major performances in various countries as a soloist and with other performers. He has visited France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Hong Kong and other countries, and received interviews from the New York Times, Shanghai Arts and other well-known media, recorded many audio CDs such as Tan Dun’s Zen – Shaolin and his solo albums. He was commissioned by the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival’s Organising Committee to compose a work, especially for the festival. His representative works include: sheng solo Feng Chu, Cease of Guangling, chamber music Ins and Outs, the multimedia theatrical art composition Shen Ren Chang, folk orchestra composition Heart • Hoe Doro and many others.
Zhong Zhi Yue has won many awards in his sheng and guqin’s performances and compositions such as first prize in second category of 5th Dragon Music Academic Award’s Chinese Traditional Music Bursary Competition for Sheng, second prize in 2009 CCTV Folk Music Competition for Sheng Young Adult category, outstanding performance award in 2009 7th Chinese Golden Bell Award For Music and 2007 1st National Guqin Competition. His composition, Ins and Outs was awarded the first prize in the 1st Xiang Yin Cup Folk Chamber Music Competition in 2007.
