Gongs have an added significance in Chinese percussion. Usually made of bronze and with shapes similar to those of plates, the use of these circular instruments can be traced back to the 6th century – the Northern Wei period.
Several gongs that can be found in the Chinese orchestra are the large gong, small gong, feng luo, ten-faced gongs and pitched gongs (yunluo).
