Singapore, 3 October 2019 (Thursday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) presents Dream Beyond concert; featuring five Rainbow Centre School students’ fruits of labour after learning music for 2 years, and the performance of Hsing Legend Youth Theatre (HLYT)’s performers dressed up in their full Peking Opera costumes. Conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, the concert will be held on 12 October 2019 (Saturday), 2pm at SCO Concert Hall.

2019 marks the 6th Dream Beyond concert, an annual charity concert organized by SCO and Deutsche Bank. Dream Beyond is one of the initiatives under the umbrella of SCO CARES. Started in 2007, SCO CARES is an initiative which aims to benefit patients and healthcare personnel with a musical healing touch, and to offer them an opportunity to appreciate the arts.

In this concert, five students from the two schools of Rainbow Centre – Yishun Park School and Margaret Drive School, willperform on stage after 2 years of individual music training, under the tutelage of SCO Percussion musician Ngoh Kheng Seng and Guzheng Associate Principal Xu Hui.

The students learned the Chinese plucked string instrument Guzheng and a few other percussion instruments, under the Talent – Development Programme (TDP), which was established since the start of 2018.

13-year-old Teo Joo Anne (张桐恩) from Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School learns the Guzheng.Since Joo Anne started learning music, her mother Mdm Grace San (孙秀花) has seen her made tremendous progress in different aspects of life. She shared with tears dwelling in her eyes, “I spent a lot of effort in teaching her, there are many things that I hope for her to change but it is not possible. If music can change her, we will be very thankful.” Mdm Grace San is encouraged by Joo Ann’s progress, and she now helps out with household chores too.

Having benefitted from the programme positively, 15-year-old Muhammad Danish from Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School now aspires to be a Guzheng musician. Danish will be going for his Grade 4 Instrument Grading Examination (Guzheng) at the end of this year. Speaking with excitement about her child’s improvement after learning music, Mdm Hanisah Bte Rejo exclaims that this is an amazing feat and hopes that Danish will one day realise his dream and become a musician.

SCO will work with Hsing Legend Youth Theatre (兴传奇青年剧场) to put up 2 pieces Nights Thoughts《夜深沉》and Spring《春》. The performers will be dressed in full opera costumes, performing on the same stage with the orchestra. HLYT was established under the umbrella of the Contemporary Legend Theatre to nurture new talents in this craft, where they infuse traditional Chinese opera into world classics, presenting performances with a contemporary spin. Recognising that interest in Chinese opera is waning among the young, HLYT was founded in 2016 to enable the new generation to learn the techniques of traditional opera and give them a platform to hone their skills.

Other notable concert highlights include: invited guest artist, visually impaired Stephanie Ow will be performing parts of the solo segments in True Colours, alongside Rainbow Centre students and Deutsche Bank performers. She will certainly charm the audiences during this finale piece. As a member of the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra, Stephanie Ow has just graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, with a Diploma in Music. She was awarded the Deutsche Bank – Singapore Chinese Orchestra Music Scholarship in 2014 to pursue her diploma studies in music.
