Singapore, 23 October 2019 (Wednesday) – For the very first time, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is working with Mediacorp artistes Felicia Chin and Ben Yeo to present a theatrical production of epic proportions! Directed by Goh Boon Teck, Infinite Island is a tale of an island with countless dreams, struggles, and hopes for the future. Be inspired as you witness the monumental transformation of Singapore - from fishing village to global city, over five visually and musically stunning chapters. Infinite Island: A Theatre in Concert is held in commemoration of the Singapore Bicentennial. SCO specially commissioned local composer Wang Chenwei for this production. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat will be the Guest-of-Honour.

Conducted by SCO Music Director, Tsung Yeh, this one-night only concert will be held on 16 November 2019 (Saturday), 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. Joining the two Mediacorp artistes on their theatrical journey are Andy Yew, Ric Liu, Sharon Sum and Tay Kexin. Together, the six casts will take on many roles to present Singapore’s transformation through story-telling.

This theatrical production Infinite Island shall bring audiences through a reflection on 200 years of history from 1819 and trace our roots further back in time. The five chapters are: The Foggy Southern Land, The Rainy Island, The Flaming Sin Chew, The Stormy Lion City and The Electrifying Singapore respectively. A multi-talented playwright and the director of theatrical production Infinite Island, Goh Boon Teck said, “I sincerely hope that the history of Singapore can be presented in a different and interesting perspective, hence I have chosen characters such as the talking animal, coolie, journalist, celestial being and delivery man, to illustrate the transformation of Singapore over the last 700 years.” When asked what one can expect to see at the theatrical production, Goh Boon Teck also mentioned, “We will weave a garden of histories with Chinese orchestral music for the ears, engrave Singapore’s rare beauty in the eyes, paint the aspirations of Singapore in the minds and frame up our beloved home in all our hearts.”

Infinite Island: A Theatre in Concert will be held at the SCO Concert Hall on 16 November 2019, at 8pm. The tickets which are priced at $38, $48, $58 and $78, are selling out fast via SISTIC. The show is 90 minutes without intermission, performed in Mandarin with English surtitles. The show is supported by Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.

About Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is Singapore’s only professional Chinese orchestra. Annexe A: Infinite Island

 

Chapter One: The Foggy Southern Land

On an evening in 1424, two ancient animals were seen at the top of Bukit Larangan / Fort Canning Hill, overlooking the increasingly busy harbour. The Lioness and Tiger were reminiscing the island’s transformation for the past 150 years.

Chapter Two: The Rainy Island

In 1819, the British landed on the island. Led by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the delegation chose Singapore because of her excellent geographical location as a natural trading port. Coolie Yashun and Samsui woman Yamei meet – their relationship developed from rivalry to love.

Chapter Three: The Flaming Sin Chew

In 1964, Chinese Newspaper Editor Cai Lingnan and Reporter Li Yijun were writing the Singapore History during the Japanese Occupation, looking particularly into the lives of individuals in Singapore or Syonan-to from 1942 to 1945.

Chapter Four: The Stormy Lion City

From 1960s till 2003, the God of Wind and Goddess of Rain were hovering around the skyline of Singapore, perplexed about what blessings to give to this adorable little island. After their mission, the duo made a wish for the future of Singapore.

Chapter Five: The Electrifying Singapore

Take a peep at today’s Singapore, through the interesting conversations between a Food Panda delivery man and a Singpost postman.
