Singapore, 5 November 2019 (Tuesday) - Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) chamber music concert Music Tuesdays: Pipa Encounters will be presenting five unique pieces of pipa works. Meticulously planned and crafted by SCO Pipa Principal Yu Jia, together with pipa musicians: Zhang Yin and Tan Joon Chin , they will be performing on 26 November 2019 (Tuesday), 7.30pm, at the SCO Concert Hall.

First launched in 2018, Music Tuesdays is a series of concerts held on Tuesday nights for audience to experience an intimate chamber concert with colleagues and friends to gather and chill out after a work day.

This concert will feature a total of five pipa works, namely Matching Flower, Pin, Cang Cai, Encounters and Wu Sheng, each showcasing musicians’ versatility and skill. Cang Cai and Wu Sheng, with the theme of peking opera, are technically challenging repertoires which require mutual chemistry and combination among the musicians to bring out the pipa’s powerful and unrestrained character.

For thousands of years, pipa has been the queen of the plucked-string instruments. For the first time, SCO will be using diyin pipa and gaoyin pipa in the concert. They are different in sizes, modified over the

 

last two years. Other pipa, include nanyin pipa and commonly used zhongyin pipa will also be showcased. (see picture below)

Other Singapore Chinese Orchestra Musicians: Jing Po (Daruan), Han Ying (Zhongruan) and Zhou Ruoyu (Erhu) as well as three outstanding students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts: Wan Jun Ni, Wang Siyuan and Wu Yitao will also participate in this concert. Music Tuesdays: Pipa Encounters will be held on 26 November 2019 (Tuesday) at 7.30pm at the SCO Concert Hall. The musicians will engage in a post- concert chat with audience after the concert.
