Singapore, 16 April 2021 (Friday) – Following the launch of programmes from January to April, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will be presenting two Live-only concerts at the Singapore Conference Hall this May. Audience members who watch live concerts at the Singapore Conference Hall will all be in for a treat!
Following the latest NAC advisory about the easing of safe management measures (SMMs) for arts and culture, the SCO Concert Hall will now be able to increase its capacity from 150 to no more than 250 audience members. All audience members are to remain seated and masked throughout the live performance; Trace Together-only Safe Entry (phone app and token) is mandatory for all audience members to enter the concert hall.
SCO presents Mother’s Day Concert: To Mom, With Love
SCO’s annual flagship heart-warming Mother’s Day Concert returns in 2021.
Getai singer Angie Lau (刘心玲), dubbed as “Queen of Cantonese Songs”, will take on the SCO Concert Hall to belt your favourite Cantonese songs. Have a family night out and enjoy familiar tunes including Destiny and Stealing your Heart with Love, Mother in the Dream, and more. SCO Suona/Guan Principal Jin Shiyi and Yangqin musician Ma Huan will also perform tunes to warm our hearts.
Conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, Mother’s Day Concert: To Mom, With Love will be held on 7 & 8 May 2021 (Fri & Sat), 8pm at the SCO Concert Hall. The concert duration is approximately 75 minutes. Sit back and relax as SCO musicians and vocalist Angie Lau serenade the audience crowd with local Cantonese favourites. This is also the first concert since COVID-19 where live audience at the concert hall gets to enjoy live vocal performance with SCO. The last vocal performance was SCO’s Chinese New Year Concert in January 2020.
Other highlights of the concert include: solo performance by SCO’s Suona/Guan Principal Jin Shiyi on the xinguan (新管); an innovation and brainchild of SCO wind musicians Liu Jiang and Jin Shiyi. He will be performing the instrumental arrangement of the popular song Wife (家后) by Taiwanese singer Jody Chiang, and this new rendition utilises a solo xinguan as the main feature accompanied by SCO. Also, Yangqin musician Ma Huan will charm the audience with her adapted version of Riverdance; a world-renowned tap dance performance piece produced by Moya Doherty. Audience members will soon find themselves immersed in the beautiful Irish countryside, and a special performance awaits!

SCO presents Young Children’s Concert 2021: DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music – Riddles in the Raindrops
SCO’s annual family favourite Young Children’s Concert returns this May, with Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong as Adventurer Quek Quek, to lead the children on a fun educational music journey to discover the mystery and beauty of plucked-strings instruments!
Imagine water trickling sounds from different instruments? Which instruments can produce these intricate and beautiful melodious music? Based on the book “Musical Adventures with Quek Quek”, don’t miss this opportunity to continue on a music adventure with Quek Quek as he explores the world of Chinese orchestra plucked-string instruments! Have a family day out and join us in this fun-filled music adventure!
The Young Children’s Concert 2021: DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music – Riddles in the Raindrops will be held on 29 May 2021 (Sat), 5pm at the SCO Concert Hall. The concert duration is approximately 1 hour. The SCO concert hall’s stage will be magically transformed into an underwater world, where adventurer Quek Quek will lead the audience to listen to the different plucked-strings instruments, which include: sanxian, guzheng, liuqin, pipa, harp, zhongruan, daruan and yangqin. The concert will be presented in English and is suitable for children of all ages. Children 2 years and above will require a ticket.
Riddles in the Raindrops is the third of the four concerts in this DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music series, which aims to introduce Chinese orchestral music, along with the different sections of the Chinese orchestra, through a unique and interesting storyboard, and spark interest in children and young adults to pick up a Chinese instrument.
This series of concert was based on a set of audiobooks titled Musical Adventures with Quek Quek – Discover the Sounds of the Chinese Orchestra!, which comprises of four books. With its story and concept by Quek Ling Kiong, written by educational expert Linda Gan and illustrated by Ah Guo (阿果), the audiobook comes with a CD of music tracks recorded by SCO. This audiobook will be on sale during the concert.

About Singapore Chinese Orchestra
Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is Singapore’s only professional Chinese orchestra.
