Singapore, 25 June 2012 (Monday) – In conjunction with Singapore Youth Festival, Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) will thrill audience with a selection of favourite masterpieces by established composers on 21 July 2012 at the SCO Concert Hall. This one-night concert will be conducted by SYCO Conductor Quek Ling Kiong.

The concert will open with renowned composer Zhao Ji Ping’s In Search of the Roots of the Ancient Pagoda Tree – a composition which expresses one’s true longing and love for one’s homeland and vividly portrays the happy scene of one’s return to the beloved hometown. The young musicians will also premier a newly-commissioned work – The Dance of Youth, composed by Chang Ping. SYCO dizi musician, Ng Sien Han will showcase his talent in dizi concerto Lan Hua Hua by Guan Ming. Let him tell you the tragic story of a kind and innocent girl, Lan Hua Hua, who fought against feudalism for marital freedom though his artistic performing technique of the flute.

The second half of the concert features two young percussionists, Sharon Wong Hui Sian and Chan Xin Yi. Together with the SYCO, they will present Qu Chun Quan’s Duet Percussion Concerto, vividly depict the charm of the Silk Road. The finale is a challenging piece, Yellow Earth, composed by renowned composer Tan Dun. The four movements: Rain Drops from the Heaven, Nao Dong Fang, Xiang Qin Qin and Shi Ban Yao Gu, showcasing the happiness and hardship of life.

SYCO is a group of highly talented young musicians between the ages of 13 to 25 years old. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and Singapore Chinese Orchestra, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene.
