Singapore, 10 May 2018 (Thursday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s annual favourite Young Children’s Concert returns in May with resident conductor Quek Ling Kiong as Adventurer Quek Quek, to bring children on a fun-filled and educational percussion treasure hunting music adventure! SCO Young Children’s Concert 2018: DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music – Carnival of Percussion! will be held on 25 and 26 May 2018 (Friday and Saturday) at the SCO Concert Hall.

 

Children will take on the role of little adventurers, along with Adventurer Quek Quek, to discover percussion instruments through Chinese orchestra and music. The concert will be presented in 5 segments: Introduction, Heartbeat of an Orchestra, Sonic Colours of Un-pitched Percussion, Wonderful Melodies of the Pitched Percussion, and Carnival of Percussion. Children will get to hear pieces including Johann Strauss’s Radetzky March, re-arranged by Qu Chun Quan; Matsuri composed by Kitaro, arranged by Sim Boon Yew; New Rolling Walnuts re-arranged by Quek Ling Kiong; An Zhi-shun’s Squabbling Duck; Shi Ba Liu Si Er arranged by Li Min Xiong; Vittorio Monti’s Czardas, re-arranged by SCO erhu musician Liu Zhi Yue.

 

Fringe Activities

 

Ticketholders may join in the fringe activities at the Concourse (Level 1) in the Singapore Conference Hall to make their own DIY percussion instruments! These DIY instruments will come in useful during the concert!

 

Quek Ling Kiong, SCO Associate Principal Tan Loke Chuah and percussionist Benjamin Boo will be conducting a percussion workshop at the Exhibition Hall (Level 1) for children to learn to play percussion instruments!

 

Both fringe activities are free for ticketholders, and will be conducted on 26 May 2018 (Saturday) from 1.30 – 2.15pm (for 2.30pm show); 4 – 4.45pm (for 5pm show).

 

This concert aims to spark the interest in Chinese music and inspire young audiences to pick up a Chinese instrument.
