Singapore, 2 July 2018 (Monday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s Campus Rhapsody will perform at Hwa Chong Institution on 25 July 2018 (Wednesday) with a repertoire of Chinese orchestra classics. This concert will be conducted by SCO Assistant Conductor Moses Gay. Admission is free.

SCO will kickstart the concert with Guo Wen Jing’s the First movement: A Va Mountain from Dianxi Folk Tunes, which would bring the audience on a tour of A Va Mountain, in celebration of the Va people who are located at the mountainous regions of Ximeng, Cangyuan and Menglian in Yunnan Province today. SCO will also perform Lo Leung Fai’s Winter, illustrating the beauty and fineness of winter. While winter brings about grandeur and magnificence, harvest and hope, the long and harsh winter is also filled with a heart of generosity and vigour of life. Hong Kong-based composer Chen Neng-Chi’s The Legend of the Dragon pays tribute to the dragon, a mysterious creature, featured in abundance in myths and legends and has long been regarded as a symbol of both ancient civilisation and royalty.

SCO will perform Law Wai Lun’s Admiral of the Seven Seas: Sea Route at the finaleLaw Wai Lun, who is SCO’s composer-in-residence, composed this work in conjunction with the 600th anniversary celebrations of Zheng He’s expedition to the West. An exemplification of Nanyang music which incorporates South-east Asian elements in Chinese instrumental music, Law Wai Lun’s composition won the Honorary Award in the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition in 2006. This work would also feature Chinese Orchestra Year 1 students from Hwa Chong Institution (College) with the SCO.
