Singapore, 4 July 2018 (Wednesday) – Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) will present its annual concert – Exuberance of Youth III on 21 July 2018 (Saturday), 8pm at the SCO Concert Hall. This concert will gather 94 members, combining current and alumni, to perform and celebrate SNYCO’s 15th year. The young musicians will be showcasing their musicality and virtuosity under the baton of SNYCO Music Director Quek Ling Kiong. The orchestra will also present the world premiere of Symphonic Floras by young local composer Phang Kok Jun.

Phang Kok Jun was also featured on The Straits Times as one of the “30 rising stars under 30” in Singapore for his compositions. He graduated from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music with First Class Honours in Music Composition and Masters’ degree at Peabody Conservatory of Music at John Hopkins University. He has also studied under award-winning composer Eric Watson.

Through the past 15 years, SNYCO has nurtured various musical talents who are contributing actively in the local music scene. SNYCO Music Director Mr Quek Ling Kiong said “SNYCO aims to evoke the passion and resilience (in them), and to develop our youths into exemplary music advocates who serve the community.” Staying true to these words, SNYCO has groomed a total of 5 members who became professional musicians at Singapore Chinese Orchestra. They are: Chang Le (Suona Associate Principal), Lo Chai Xia (Zhongruan Associate Principal), Koh Min Hui (zhongruan), Benjamin Boo (percussion) and Lee Jun Cheng (dizi).

In this 15th anniversary concert, SNYCO will perform a diverse and challenging set of repertoire that will feature both ensemble and orchestral works. SNYCO will perform works by illustrious composers such as the famous Hou Tu by Tang Jian Ping and The Sound of Water by Yan Hui Chang.  Alumni members will join SNYCO in Guzheng, Percussion and Orchestra piece, The Rhythm, by Luo Xiao Ci; and Hooked on Classics No. 4, a double bass, cello and strings ensemble arrangement by Qu Chun Quan.
