Singapore, 10 August 2018 (Friday) – GRAMMY Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell returns to present a repertoire of violin classics! Joshua Bell and SCO: Butterfly Lovers will be held on 30 August 2018 (Thursday), 7.30pm, at the Esplanade Concert Hall. This concert will be conducted by Music Director Tsung Yeh.

Performing on the 1713 Huberman Stradivarius violin and a late 18th century French bow by Francois Tourte, Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists of his era. He is currently the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and is the only person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958. He is also best known for his incognito performance in a Washington, D.C. subway station in 2007. Not only is Joshua Bell a musician, but he also values music as a diplomatic and educational tool. He has participated in President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities’ first cultural mission to Cuba, and devoted himself to several charitable causes, most notably Education Though Music, which places instruments in the hands of thousands of children in America’s inner cities.

In this concert, he will be performing Camille Saint-Saens’ Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28; Jules Massenet’s Thais: Meditation; Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Op. 20; and the much-loved Chinese classic The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, a masterpiece which tells a story of two star-crossed lovers whose relationship was rejected by families due to an arranged marriage, and how this couple eventually reincarnated as butterflies at their graves.

SCO will also perform Tan Dun’s Yellow Earth and Guo Wen Jing’s First Movement: A Va Mountain from Dianxi Folk Tunes.

There will be a by-invitation concert on 31 August (Friday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall, for invited guests only. 31 August’s concert will be recorded live for a live concert album release by Sony Classical and is planned to debut in 2019.

Joshua Bell appears by arrangement with Park Avenue Artists and Octagon. Mr. Bell records exclusively for Sony Classical.
