Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s audience favourite Community Series concert will be at Far East Plaza to celebrate Chinese New Year with you! Titled Spring Abundance at Far East Plaza, this concert, to be conducted by Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, will be on 16 February 2019 (Saturday) at 6pm. Admission is free.
SCO will perform Joe Hisaishi’s Ghibli Delivery Service, which consists of a medley of theme songs from popular anime feature films produced by Studio Ghibli, to kickstart the concert. Four of SCO’s musicians will be performing concertos with SCO. SCO dizi principal Yin Zhiyang will perform Ning Bao Sheng’s Spring on the Xiang River （春到湘江）; gaohu musician Xu Wenjing will perform the Fourth movement of Kwan Nai-Chung’s Second Erhu Concerto – Nostalgic Dreams of Beijing（第二二胡协奏曲-追梦京华）titled New Year’s Eve（除夕）, celebrating the arrival of spring where the composer recalled scenes of festive celebration in Beijing during his childhood on the eve of Chinese New Year. Suona associate principal, Chang Le, and guzheng musician, Xu Hui, will perform Phang Kok Jun’s Rose Dance of the Yi People（彝族玫瑰舞）.
SCO will also perform Sulwyn Lok’s Neo | Pipa Voices（新|琵琶语）. Audience can also sing along to Lam Zi Peng’s rearrangement of a selection of Chinese pop singer Faye Wong’s best hits which includes Red Bean（红豆）, That Fleeting Year （匆匆那年）, Blinded Without Regrets（执迷不悔） and more. SCO will perform a finale with Sim Boon Yew’s Spring Festival Medley （迎春组曲）which includes familiar Chinese New Year songs: Spring Returns to the Good Earth（大地回春） and more, along with Qu Chun Quan’s rearrangement of evergreen work Horse Racing （赛马）.
