New Music Director of Macao Chinese Orchestra, Liu Sha, returns to conduct Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Singapore, 26 September 2018 (Wednesday) – The youngest of China’s Top 10 Chinese Orchestral Music Conductors of Excellence and a National Class One Conductor, Liu Sha, returns to conduct Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) with an exuberant programme of renowned Chinese works! This concert titled Liu Sha and SCO will be held on 13 October 2018 (Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall.

 

Liu Sha is the youngest of China’s Top 10 Chinese Orchestral Music Conductors of Excellence and the Conductor-in-Residence from the China National Traditional Orchestra. He has been praised by both the East and West as a versatile conductor, and has conducted multiple orchestras all over the world. In August 2018, he was appointed the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Chinese Orchestra. This will be Liu Sha’s third visit to conduct SCO. He will kickstart the concert with an award-winning young composer, Kong Zhi Xuan’s work Go Across The Rainforests, which the composer attempts to use music to express the relationship between humans and nature. This piece won the 3rd prize at the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition in 2015.

 

Liu Sha will also present Chen Si Ang’s Interstellar and Chinese composer Zhang Zhao’s Variations of Harmony Between Ethnic Groups. This piece incorporates elements from 7 ethnic groups using 7 colours to represent the musical diversity of these ethnic groups.

 

SCO erhu musician, Shen Qin, has won numerous competitions at both the provincial and national level and produced multiple CD recordings. Her versatility in erhu performing have won her compliments by renowned erhu maestro Min Hui Fen. She will be performing Liu Wenjin’s erhu concerto The Brave Spirits of the Snow Mountain, which was a piece composed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Red Army’s Long March victory in China.

 

SCO dizi principal, Yin Zhi Yang, was the receiver of Outstanding Performance Award at the China National Chinese Music Competition Shan Cheng Cup in 1989, and winner of the China Central Song and Dance Troupe Audition in 1992. He is currently the guest professor of Shenyang Conservatory of Music. In this concert, he will perform Liu Wenjin’s dizi concerto Love for the Eagle, which draws inspiration from the analogy of an eagle. This work presents an eagle as strong yet graceful, sharp but magnanimous, arrogant yet thoughtful.
