Cheng Ho Kwan Kevin
Cheng Ho Kwan Kevin is currently a sheng musician with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kevin Cheng learned the sheng under Hau Chiyeung and Leung Yan-chiu while studying at the Diocesan Boys’ School. He won numerous awards, namely sheng – Junior Class, Senior Class and Advanced Class and was awarded first runner-up in the Chinese Instrumental Solo Award at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival between 2004 and 2007, an impressive feat.
Kevin Cheng graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2014, and was awarded a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours. He majored in sheng under the tutelage of Cheng Tak-wai, and with a minor in Chinese percussion under Yim Hok-man. He was privileged to receive masterclasses by renowned sheng maestros such as Hu Tianquan, Weng Zhenfa and Loo Sze-wang. During his studies, he was presented with the Enchanting Music Scholarship, the Hongkong Bank Foundation Hong Kong – Mainland Exchange Scholarship, Grantham Scholarship, HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund and DBS Asian Innovation Scholarship.
As a sheng principal at the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) from 2009 to 2014, Kevin Cheng participated in regular performances and overseas tours. In 2011, he performed with HKYCO as a soloist, holding a sheng Concerto – Tianshan Rhapsody, at the 2011 Contemporary Chinese Orchestra Festival in Chang Hua, Taiwan.
In 2010, he was invited to perform at the Setouchi International Arts Festival in Japan. In 2012, he was chosen as one of the ‘Young Music Makers’ by the Radio Television Hong Kong and participated in recording, videotaping and CD releases. In May 2014, Kevin Cheng held his graduation recital at the HKAPA. In July 2014, he was invited to perform at the Match Making Concert ‘When Emerging Performers Meet Forerunner Composers’ organized by the Radio Television Hong Kong, premièring Daniel Ng’s Ru Ge (sheng solo) and Lam Kin-yee’s The Legend of Vega (sheng and yangqin duet).
During 2010 and 2014, Kevin Cheng also won in the Academy Concerto Competition for four times and performed with the Academy Symphony Orchestra as a soloist – the sheng concerto, Princess Wencheng, Peacock, By the Side of Xiling Gorge, including the world première of sheng concerto Groovy II by Hong Kong composer Keith Hon.
In June 2015, he was invited to hold a sheng recital ‘In Love with Sheng’ by the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Deparment at the Hong Kong City Hall, an astounding achievement for a young musician. In September 2015, he held another sheng recital ‘Sounds of Sheng’ at the Esplanade, premiering several sheng compositions in Singapore.
Kevin Cheng is also an Honorary Council Member of China Professional Sheng Committee and Singapore Sheng Association and Artistic Instructor for Resonance – Sheng Ensemble. Over the years, he has also been an active figure on the music scene. He has gone on performance tours with various orchestras and ensembles, covering Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and Europe, etc. His passion and desire for performing and music allows him to soar to greater heights.
