After years of meticulous preparation and planning, SCO sets off in October under the leadership of Music Director Tsung Yeh on its first visit to Hong Kong. World-famous tenor Warren Mok (one of the “Three Tenors of China”) will take the stage together with the acclaimed Chinese soprano Wu Bixia (better known as the ‘East-West Nightingale’). Additionally, the Hong Kong Opera Chorus joins us in a line-up over a hundred singers. They perform the symphonic poem Marco Polo and Princess Blue by composer Liu Yuan and lyricist Wang Yi Yan. Concertmaster Li Bao Shun also perform Tan Dun’s huqin masterpiece Fire Ritual. Two concise and witty orchestral works are then included in the final segments of the programme: Mahjong Kakis and Izpirazione II – Rambutan respectively by local Singaporean composer Eric Watson and by Malaysian composer Simon Kong Su Leong. The concert commences with Thunder Storm and Drought, a piece of Guangdong music: connoisseurs from the fragrant harbour will gain a deep impression of the Nanyang style but also enjoy melodies they enjoy.
