Thank you for the overwhelming support to the "Encounter: Liang Wern Fook's Composition Showcase" concert! Tickets for both shows are officially sold out. We look forward to 8th of June where we encounter ourselves, encounter others, and encounter the beautiful musical moments.

Concert Highlight: The theme of "Encounter" will run through the entire concert: Encounter with Life, Encounter with Youth, Encounter with Uncertainty, Encounter with Home, Encounter with Reconciliation, and eventually Encounter with Self. In this concert, Dr Liang Wern Fook's songs at different stages will be compiled into Chinese symphonic poems with different movements, but organically combined in a narrative poetry, taking everyone on a musical journey.

Under the baton of SCO Principal Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, this SCO losing concert for Season 23/24 is bound to deliver a special concert experience as Dr Liang Wern Fook takes on the creative conceptualisation, including the choice of music and words, while Singapore Chinese Orchestra Composer-in-Residence Wang Chenwei helms responsibilities of Music Arrangement.

Quek Ling Kiong is the first Principal Conductor of SCO to have been born and bred in Singapore. Widely hailed as the “People’s Conductor”, he has more than 25 years of professional musical experience under his belt. He assumed the role of Principal Conductor in 2023, after a decade as its Resident Conductor.

When it comes to xinyao, the name Liang Wern Fook is known to all. Almost everyone of us would have probably heard some of the songs he has written. Dr Liang Wern Fook is well known for his talents across artistic media and as a scholar. He straddles both the fields of literature and music, being regarded as a “新谣精神人物” [“Spiritual Figure of Xinyao”]. Liang’s awards are numerous, including the Young Artist Award for Literature, the Cultural Medallion for Music including Lyrics, and other accolades.

Wang Chenwei is the Composer-in-Residence of SCO, adjunct faculty at the National Institute of Education (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, as well as a council member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation. As the Head of Research and Education at The TENG Company, he is the main co-author of The TENG Guide to the Chinese Orchestra (2019), a 624-page book on instrumentation and orchestration.

In addition, Dr Liang personally executed many components of the concert; from the initial ideation of the performance, to the creative conceptualisation and arrangement of the programme and selection of songs and singers. Four singers: Joanna Dong (董姿彦)、George Chan (田伟鸿)、Ric Liu (刘晋旭)、Chriz Tong (汤薇恩) will evoke familiar emotions with their singing, and bring fresh surprises!
