Orchestra Librarian

Position Summary:

This full-time position oversees SCO’s music library developmental initiatives, which include composer workshop, research trips, securing publishing contracts with composers, and actively seeking means to exploit the rights obtained etc. S/he needs to assist in daily operation, and works closely with conductors, principals and other artistic staff members, as well as to provide administrative support to the purchase, commission, loan, and cataloging of musical works.


  • Arrange for the purchase and rental of scores, and commission works with composers to meet the music needs of the orchestra for performances/events
  • Curate the maintenance of on-site and off-site orchestral repertoire collection, including tracking performance history and updating inventory as needed (noting editions and bowings in stock)
  • Publish SCO’s commission works
  • Report to all appropriate performance licensing organisations the music performed in all concerts
  • Handle score rental requests from external organisations
  • Assist in all aspects of music preparation for all services of SCO and Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra
  • Prepare the annual orchestra library budget, under the supervision of the Head of Department
  • Perform all administrative duties such as filing, procurement and issuance of contracts


  • A degree with emphasis in music, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
  • Bilingual in English and Chinese for handling Chinese documents and Chinese speaking stakeholders
  • Knowledge of orchestral music, music research skills, ability to read, understand, and transpose a full orchestra score, including Chinese music numbered music notation. Experience as an orchestra librarian and/or orchestra musician preferred.
  • Ability to copy orchestra parts cleanly and legibly using music notation software.
  • Independent individual who is self-motivated, has excellent inter-personal skills and strong organizational abilities, while maintaining the ability to successfully work in a team environment
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, music notation software (such as Sibelius, Finale)
  • Open to using technology to improve efficiency and innovation
  • Able to work on weeknights and weekends for concert duties
