He Zhan Hao and Chen Gang’s co-composed Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto is a world-famous violin concerto. Since its debut in 1959, audiences worldwide have been smittened by its graceful rhythm and moving melody. In this concert, Lu Siqing, will debut with the SCO with this timeless masterpiece. His interpretation of Butterfly Lovers has been widely considered the best. At the age of 8, Lu Siqing was accepted by the Central Conservatory of Music as a special student, who was the youngest student ever accepted at the famed institution. He is also the first Asian violinist to win the first prize at the prestigious Paganini International Vionlin Competition in Italy in 1987. Hailed by Strad as “an outstanding talent”, Lu Siqing is acknowledged one of the most outstanding Chinese violinists of his generation. He gives more than 100 performances a year worldwide, performing with world-renowned conductors and orchestras.

Another star of the concert is the famed erhu master Song Fei. She is the Vice-President of China Conservatory of Music, Vice-President of Chinese Musician Association, Head of Performing Arts Committee and President of Erhu Association. Song Fei is known as the “Queen of Chinese Traditional Instruments” as she can play more than 10 different instruments including erhu, lute and koto. Song Fei will showcase her outstanding erhu skill in Kuan Nai-chung’s Erhu Concerto No. 5 – Centennial Memorial of Xinhai in this concert. The world premier of this piece was launched in October 2011 at Xinhai Revolution Commemorative Concert in Macau and Song Fei was designated as the soloist by composer Kuan Nai-chung. The 2nd version of this piece will be world premiere in this concert.

This concert will also feature Xu Jian Qiang’s Yue Opera Dreams of the Red Chamber Suite and Stephen Yip’s Nine Actors, the 2nd prize winning composition of the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestra Composition 2011. Don’t miss it!
