Singapore, 30 April 2013 (Tuesday) – Renowned artistes, Xu Feng Xia (singer/ guzheng & sanxian musician) and Huo Yong Gang (singer/ banhu musician), will perform with the SCO on 1 June 2013 (Saturday) – singing and playing simultaneously! SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh conducts.
Xu Feng Xia was born in Shanghai in 1963 and graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1985. She has moved to Germany since 1991 and began to discover new musical ideas and materials. She plays various instruments including guzheng, sanxian, guqin and liuqin. She has developed her own personal style: combining modern and traditional art forms across genres, styles and disciplines. She has tried using musical bow to play sanxian and using wine glass to play guzheng. She is the first Chinese musician to win the prestigious 2009 Jazz Pott Award in Essen, Germany. Xu Feng Xia will showcase her unique performing style – a mixture of sanxian, guzheng and vocal in two commissioned compositions: Chong Kee Yong’s Hak.Qin and Lv Huang’s Bian Shu IV.
Another star of the concert is the famed banhu musician and singer Huo Yong Gang. He is currently the Associate Professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music and President of Shanghai Youth Chinese Orchestra. Huo Yong Gang’s skills are underpinned by years of experience, and he has come to develop a tone both rich and ever-charging across interpretations of pieces from wide-ranging styles. He will perform as banhu soloist in Northeast Folk Song Pretty Lady and showcase his singing talent in Dong Wei Jie’s Sleeves.
This concert will also feature Dong Wei Jie’s Shanghai Variations – Zi Zhu Diao and Chen Da Zhao’s Yellow River Rhapsody (selection). Don’t miss it!
