Singapore, 17 July 2013 (Wednesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) launched the 2013-2014 concert season on 15 July 2013 (Monday), 12.30pm at the Singapore Conference Hall. SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh and General Manager Terence Ho reveiled the list of exciting concerts and events and SCO’s new initiatives in the new season.

An exciting 2013-2014 concert season
Great performances await you in the new season! Expect internationally renowned artistes from the United States, Germany, China and Taiwan including percussion master Li Biao who will kickstart the season, erhu doyenne Min Hui Fen, named the best performer of Teochew gongs and drums Chen Zuo Hui, acclaimed German-based sheng master Wu Wei, two Grammy-award winner American violinist Mark O’Connor, cellist Qin Li-wei and multi-talented Taiwanese conductor Chung Yiu-kwong.

SCO will continue to present a wide array of concerts ranging from the traditional, modern to East-West fusion. In Tunes of Teochew concert (22 & 23 November 2013), top Teochew opera actors from Shantou – Sun Xiao Hua and Chen Lian Zhong – will take centrestage with Nam Hwa Amateur Musical & Dramatic Association to perform a string of Teochew opera classics. SCO will also perform the opening concert for the 31st Asian Composers League Festival 2013 (20 September 2013) with a selection of contemporary works by composers from Singapore and across Asia. SCO’s signature East-meets-West concert, in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres by the Bay, will present A Night with Mark O’Connor (5 July 2014).

Popular concerts such as Rhapsodies of Spring 2014 (10 & 11 January 2014), Mother’s Day Concert (2 & 3 May 2014) and The Little Adventurer of SCO (14 & 15 March 2014) will continue to bring delight to our audience.

Two mega events in 2014: SCO China Concert Tour 2014 and Mega Concert “Our People Our Music 2014”
SCO will go on a concert tour to China from 17 – 24 May 2014 to perform at the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival (17 May), Hangzhou Grand Theatre (20 May) and at the Singapore Festival at the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre (23 & 24 May).

One of SCO’s aspirations is to be the People’s orchestra. Following the successful inaugural mega concert staged in 2004 with 2,400 musicians and choir members, SCO will stage the second instalment of Our People Our Music concert at the newly built National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub on 20 June 2014. The theme of this concert will be an ode to our nation – My Home, Singapore!

New appointment: Young Assistant Conductor-in-Residence, Moses Gay En Hui
To groom young local conductors, SCO has appointed Moses Gay En Hui as its Young Assistant Conductor-in-Residence. This appointment will take effect from 1 August 2013.

Moses Gay graduated with a First Class Honours Degree from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) validated by the University of Wales in 2010. In the same year, he was admitted to pursue a Masters Degree in Conducting at the China Conservatory of Music. In 2009, Moses participated in a conducting masterclass organised by the China Conservatory of Music and won the Most Promising Award. He is currently the Conducting Assistant at the SCO (from August 2011 to July 2013), member of the Huqin Association of Singapore as well as the Concertmaster and Assistant Conductor for the Toa Payoh West Community Club Chinese Orchestra.

Education and Outreach
As a people’s orchestra, SCO aspires to bring the best of Chinese orchestra music to everyone, to every place in Singapore, for everyone’s enjoyment. Singapore Press Holdings’ Gift of Music Series will continue to present SCO’s Community Concerts for the 8th year; Deutsche Bank Singapore will present SCO’s Lunchtime Rhapsody for the 3rd year running, and Keppel Land will sponsor Outdoor Rhapsody for the first time to bring melodious tunes to the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

New technological implementations
Concert audience can download concert house programmes and SCO’s newsletter Hua Yue from SCO’s website (www.sco.com.sg) and mobile apps. These new technological implementations create a convenient platform for audience to preview the concert programmes before the concert and make it handy for viewers to read about SCO programmes and news on-the-go.
