Singapore, 17 July 2014 (Thursday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra will present two-nights of erhu-themed concert in memorial of late-doyenne Min Hui Fen on 25 & 26 July 2014 at the SCO Concert Hall. This concert was choreographed a year ago by erhu maestro Min Hui Fen who passed away at the age of 69 in May 2014 after battling a long illness. Liu Ju, son of Min Hui Fen, Music Director of the Central Ballet Orchestra, will conduct this concert with her two disciples – Zhao Jian Hua (SCO Erhu I Principal) and renowned erhu musician Liu Guang Yuwill perform in this concert.
Doyenne of the world of Chinese fiddles, “Queen of Erhu” Min Hui Fen first made history by winning top prize in the 1963 ‘Shanghai Spring Festival’ erhu competition. Her rendition of River Water once reduced well-known conductor Seiji Ozawa to tears. Min Hui Fen left a music legacy spanning half a century. The world of Chinese traditional music is mourning the loss of such a grand master, however, her contribution to the erhu and her spirit of sharing Chinese music will remain deeply in our memories. In this concert, her discipline Zhao Jian Hua will perform Yang Li Qing’s composition Song of Sadness as a love tribute to his teacher. Song of Sadness is based on the materials of River Water, which is a piece of folk music generally used in household Buddhist ceremonies.
Min Hui Fen is also a prolific composer. Her famous piece Wishes of the Honghu People will be presented in this concert by her disciple, China’s first class performer, Liu Guang Yu. Wishes of the Honghu People was rearranged from Honghu’s Red Guards and was composed based on its lyrics and the change in moods, showcasing the heroic spirit of the Honghu people. Liu Guang Yu will also perform famous erhu piece Reflections of the Moon on Erquan and his composition Ant. Reflections of the Moon on Erquan, composed by Hua Yan Jun (nicknamed Ah Bing the Blind), expresses the feelings and predicament of the pitiful musician before he began to vision a better future. Derived from Chongqing nursery rhyme Yellow Silk Ant, Liu Guang Yu’s Ant depicts the spirit of unity and strive for success.
The concert will also present ancient tune The Moon on High, Wang Chen Wei’s Sisters’ Islands and Xin Hu Guang’s Gada Meilin Symphonic Poem.
