Singapore, 14 August 2014 (Thursday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s newly-appointed Assistant Conductor Moses Gay will take the podium to conduct his first full-fledge ticketed concert of the SCO in Unforgettable Tunes concert on 30 August 2014, Saturday, 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. He will lead the orchestra to perform a series of evergreen Chinese orchestra repertoire including Fisherman’s Song of the East China Sea and Dance of the Yao People!
Moses Gay was appointed as SCO’s Assistant Conductor from 1 August 2014. He started his artistic partnership with SCO in 2011 as its Conducting Assistant, whilst pursuing a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the China Conservatory of Music on a full scholarship under the tutelage of Youqing Yang and Tsung Yeh. He was SCO’s Young Assistant Conductor-in-Residence from August 2013 to July 2014. At age 16, Moses Gay conducted for the first time with his school orchestra – Ngee Ann Secondary School and received much appreciation and applause from the audience. Renowned conductor, Ku Lap Man, who was present at that time commented that Moses will be the next rising star in the conducting circle. In 2009, he was presented with the “Conductor with the Most Promising Potential” award at a conducting masterclass held at the China Conservatory of Music. June 2014, Moses led over 1,000 erhu players to perform renowned erhu piece rearranged by himself – Horse Racing, at “Our People, Our Music 2014” mega concert held at the National Stadium and received very good reviews.
The programme of Unforgettable Tunes concert is choreographed by Moses, including Chinese music favourites such as Song of the East China Sea composed by Ma Sheng Long and Gu Guan Ren in 1959, depicting the life of fishermen at the East China Sea; and Dance of the Yao People composed by Mao Yuan and Liu Tie Shan, portraying the festival spirit of the diligent Yao people. Moses has also selected popular pieces such as Lo Leung Fai’s Winter, Liu Wen Jin’s Jasmine Flower and Kuan Nai-chung’s Bumper Harvest Worship.
SCO suona associate principal, Chang Le, and gaohu associate principal, Zhou Ruo Yu, will also star in this concert. Chang Le will present Zhang Xiao Feng’s Liangshan Capriccio – this piece makes use of the stirring melancholic timbre of the suona to pay tribute to the unyielding spirit of the Liangshan heroes from the Chinese classic novel “Water Margin”. It consists of three movements: Boundless Path, The Stormy Chapter and Ritual of the Heroic Spirit. Zhou Ruo Yu will play The Sunshine on Tashkurgan, a joyous depiction of Tajik song and dance, composed by Chen Gang and arranged by SCO composer-in-residence Phoon Yew Tien. Chinese music lovers must not miss this concert!
