Singapore, 28 August 2015 (Friday) – The preliminary results for the Singapore International Competition for Singapore Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) 2015 have been finalised. After the preliminary adjudication held over 3 days, 13 candidates have been shortlisted for the finals. The finalists are between the age of 21 to 38 years, hence reflects the growing potential of young Chinese orchestral composers. The 13 finalists include 4 participants from Singapore, 4 participants from China, 3 participants from Hong Kong, 1 participant from Taiwan and 1 participant from the United States of America. One of the Singaporean finalists, Chew Jun An, has been shortlisted for 2 award categories – Singaporean Composer Award and Young Singaporean Composer Award with his composition, Bale Bengong.
The panel of adjudicators includes SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh as the adjudicator chairman, established Chinese composer Gao Ping, American composer based in Singapore John Sharpley, and vice-president of the Singapore Association of Composer Liu Bin. SICCOC 2015 attracted a total of 129 registrations worldwide with 66 submissions. The 13 finalists will be invited to attend the Finals held on 20 November 2015 (Friday) to compete for the Composition Award, Nanyang Award, Singaporean Composer Award and Young Singaporean Composer Award. The Award Presentation Ceremony and Concert will be held on 21 November 2015 (Saturday), 7.30pm at SCO Concert Hall. This year, there will be an “Audience’s Choice” award where audience can vote for their favourite piece during the finals concert. A symposium will be held on 22 November 2015 (Sunday) at SCO Concert Hall. Music Director, Mr Tsung Yeh, the panel of adjudicators and winners will share their thoughts on the compositions. Professor of Musicology from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Professor Yang Yandi and Malaysian composer Yii Kah Hoe would be conducting thematic presentations. As the keynote speaker, Professor Yang Yandi will be sharing his thoughts on Nanyang Music: the Past and Future. Audience could get to understand the history and progress of nanyang music. Composer Yii Kah Hoe will share on his topic of My Nanyang Music Journey.

Organised by SCO and supported by patron Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, SICCOC 2015 aims to stimulate interest and promote awareness of Nanyang and Singapore inspired Chinese Orchestral repertoire. Following the previous SICCOC held in 2006 and 2011 respectively, this is the third series of the competition. Besides providing a platform for budding composers to showcase their talent, it is an opportunity for audience to appreciate Chinese orchestral pieces by other composers worldwide. Through SICCOC, SCO hopes to nurture potential composers and present their compositions to audiences in Singapore and beyond.
