Singapore, 20 November 2015 (Friday) – Organised by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) and supported by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the finals of the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) 2015 was held on 20 November 2015 (Friday). After an intense competition among the outstanding submissions, 5 winning compositions have emerged.

Award-winning Compositions:
Composition Award
1st Prize: Arise, You Lion of Glory! Fung Dic-Lun Gordon (Hong Kong)
2nd Prize: The Calling from the Distant Hills Liu Wei-Chih (Taiwan) 
3rd Prize: Go Across the Rainforests Kong Zhi Xuan (China)

Gordon Fung Dic-Lun, who first prize, expressed that, “I am elated to be able to win this award. Singapore Chinese Orchestra is well-known its high standard of performance, so I am very happy that the premiere of my composition will be performed by them. Through this competition, I have gained a better understanding of Chinese instruments, opening up more possibilities in my composing work.”

Second prize winner, Liu Wei-Chih was thrilled to receive the award. “The inspiration for my composition comes from a Hakka folk song, what motivated me to start writing this piece is that my mother is a Hakka.”

The adjudicators for the finals include Professor of Composition, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, Chen Yi; General Director of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Chung Yiu Kwong; Associate Professor and Head of Composition at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Ho Chee Kong; Chairman of Asian Composers League, Isao Matsushita; Director of Shanghai Key Laboratory of Music Acoustic Arts, Director of Academic Committee and Professor of Composition and Electronic Music Composition, Xu Shu Ya; and Malaysian composer Yii Kah Hoe.

The Concert for Award-winning Compositions and Award Presentation Ceremony will be held on 21 November 2015 (Saturday), 7.30pm at SCO Concert Hall. Guest-of-Honour Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Ministry of Finance, will grace the event. SCO will perform the award-winning pieces, followed by the award presentation ceremony. This year, there will be an “Audience Choice” award where audience can vote for their favourite piece at the concert. An “Orchestra’s Choice” award, voted by SCO’s musicians, will also be presented during the ceremony.

A Symposium will be held on 22 November 2015 (Sunday), at SCO concert hall. Guest-of-Honour Dr Liu Thai Ker and Mr Choo Thiam Siew will present their opening speech to commence the event. Music Director and Chairman for SICCOC 2015 panel of adjudicators, Tsung Yeh, together with panel of adjudicators and award winners will share their thoughts on the compositions. Audience can also get to listen to Vice President of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Professor Yang Yandi and Malaysian composer Yii Kah Hoe’s thematic presentations. As the keynote speaker, Professor Yang Yandi will be sharing his thoughts on Nanyang Music: the Past and Future. Composer Yii Kah Hoe will share on his topic of My Nanyang Music Journey.

With the mission to inspire Singapore and the world with our music, SCO aims to stimulate interest and promote awareness of Nanyang- and Singapore-inspired Chinese orchestra repertoire through this competition.
