Singapore, 13 December 2015 (Sunday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2016 with a calendar concert season of great concerts featuring international and local musicians. This first concert of the year will feature three established young female plucked-strings musicians with SCO. Conducted by SCO’s Resident Conductor, Mr Quek Ling Kiong, this concert features world-acclaimed konghou musician Wu Lin, talented local twin sisters, zhongruan musician Tan Su-Min and guzheng musician Tan Su-Hui to present a night of classical traditional Chinese music. Heroines of Plucked Strings will be held on 9 January 2016 (Saturday), 8pm at SCO Concert Hall.
Renowned Chinese composer and conductor Peng Xiu Wen’s Three Variations on Plum Blossoms will be the opening piece for the concert. With its melodious tune and refreshing arrangement, it describes the composer’s interpretation of plum blossoms’ characteristics. Konghou is also described as a Chinese harp with its beautiful and rich melodic tonality. Acclaimed konghou virtuoso, Wu Lin, will debut with SCO in this concert to perform a local premiere of Liu Chang Yuan’s Kong Gu You Lan (空谷幽兰). This piece was specially composed for her by Liu Chang Yuan. Audience will also get to hear Wu Lin’s rendition of Chinese composer Liu Wei Guang’s Qing Ming Shang He Tu (清明上河图), inspired by the famous Song dynasty painting of the same name.
Talented former Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) members, Singaporean twin sisters Tan Su-Min and Tan Su-Hui will perform with SCO for the first time since their graduation from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. They will world premiere Ancient Dreams, a newly-composed piece specially for the sisters for this concert by young talented Singaporean composer, Phang Kok Jun. The sisters have also re-arranged an ancient tune, Wine Revelry, presented in the form of zhongruan and guzheng duet. This piece expresses in a restrained manner, the emotional upheaval of someone who had suffered injustice and indulges in binge drinking.
Lan Cheng Bao’s Painted Scrolls of the River Li will bring out the flavor of the famous character, Liu Sanjie (刘三姐). The finale of the concert will present Liu Qing’s Martial Piece, featuring SCO musician Zhong Zhi Yue on guqin and soprano He Miya. Fans of guqin and ancient tunes must not miss this one night only concert by the three young plucked-strings musicians!
