Zhong Zhi Yue, a young and accomplished musician specializing in both the sheng and guqin, and also a composer, graduated with a master’s degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is currently a sheng musician with SCO, as well as a committee member of the professional sheng instrument section of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society and a member of the Shanghai Musicians Association and the Shanghai Guqin Research Association. Zhong Zhi Yue is also founder of the Singapore He Yue Zhai Arts Centre.
Zhong Zhi Yue started learning music since young. He enrolled into the Secondary School of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, studied sheng technique under the tutelage of Xu Chao Ming from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He also trained in the Guangling School of Guqin under Dai Xiao Lian, and learned music composition from esteemed composers Xu Jian Qiang and Law Wai Lun. In 2006, he graduated a year early due to his outstanding academic results, with a sheng Bachelor’s degree and guqin professional diploma.
He has starred in many major concerts and festivals in various countries as both a soloist and with other performers, repeatedly visiting France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Malaysia, Hong Kong and other countries. His performances include appearances at the Salzburg Contemporary Music Festival, Shanghai International E-Arts Festival, the Hong Kong “Music from the Heart” series, the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, the Swiss Arts Festival, the CAFAM Life / Arts Quarterly at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and the Singapore Huayi Festival. He has worked with conductors including Xie Fei Yun, Kuan Nai-chung, Tsung Yeh, Terje Mikkelsen (Norway), Quek Ling Kiong and Yao Shen Shen.
Zhong Zhi Yue has been interviewed by the New York Times, Shanghai Arts, 95.8FM and other well-known media, and has recorded many audio CDs such as Tan Dun’s Zen – Shaolin in addition to his own solo albums. As a composer, he has been commissioned to write works for both the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and has also written arrangements for famous singers.
His Shanghai graduation concert from 2009 was subsequently made into a live concert recording DVD by ROI Production Ltd, Hong Kong. He has also held a recital concert, Melodies of Qin, Sheng & Ruan with zhongruan musician Han Ying at the Esplanade Recital Studio in 2012.
Zhong Zhi Yue has won many awards for his sheng and guqin performances and compositions. These include first prize in the second category of the 5th Dragon Music Academic Award’s Chinese Traditional Music Bursary Competition for Sheng, second prize at the 2009 CCTV Folk Music Competition in the Sheng Young Adult category, an outstanding performance award at both the 2009 7th Chinese Golden Bell Music Awards and at the 2007 first National Guqin Competition. His composition Ins and Outs was awarded the first prize in the 1st Xiang Yin Cup Folk Chamber Music Competition in 2007.
