Singapore, 11 August 2023 (Friday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) launches a series of concerts this August to September 2023, catered to draw in both SCO fans, as well as new audiences young and old.  The SCO will also draw from both past and present, to breathe new life into orchestral masterpieces that have captivated their local and international audiences through the years.

Indulge in the tunes of SCO and celebrate festivities in the many upcoming SCO outreach concerts in the community, and ticketed concerts at SCO Concert Hall. Also, take part in erhu workshops whereby Concertmaster Li Baoshun and Erhu II Principal Zhu Lin share tips and insights on overcoming challenges in learning erhu.

Are you an erhu player? Eager to learn more about this beautiful instrument?

Here’s your chance! Let us dive into The World of Erhu Music together with our erhu masters Li Baoshun and Zhu Lin this August, where you can get tips on overcoming hurdles you may face during your music journey. Mr Li will also be sharing his insights on how to master pieces, using 'The Ballad of Yubei' as his case study of choice.

SCO presents SCMF Opening Gala concert Heartstrings, happening on 27 August, 5pm

Singapore Chinese Orchestra is proud to be invited to present Singapore Chinese Music Federation’s (SCMF) 10th Anniversary & Opening Gala Concert Heartstrings as part of Singapore Chinese Music Festival 2023.

Led by SCMF President Dr Tay Teow Kiat and SCO Principal Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, the SCO will perform a total of seven repertoire during the concert. Join us, and get awed and inspired by this special musical connection.

A new season, a fresh beginning!

The season-opening concert will be presented by SCO Principal Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, featuring master musicians Li Baoshun, Huang Guifang, and Yin Zhiyang. Together, they will serenade the audience with pieces like the erhu classic Red Plum Capriccio, sanxian concerto Aleppo, and dizi concerto The Butterfly Dream. In addition, the audience can look forward to interactions with Conductor Quek during Yellow River Rhapsody!

SCO's new Chamber Charms concert series seeks to share the charms of chamber music! The first concert in this series, titled “Night of Percussion”, has been curated by SCO Section Leader (Winds and Percussion) and Dizi Principal, Yin Zhiyang. Meanwhile, SCO Percussion Principal, Boo Chong Wei Benjamin will be leading the SCO percussion musicians to perform musical works fusing tradition and modernity, East and West. The novel approach to percussion classics promises to wow the audience with a brand-new experience!

“Ancient Moon, Present Light” is part of a new program by SCO and Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre held in celebration of key Chinese festivals. For the Mid-Autumn Festival, timeless classics Moonlit Night on a Spring River and Blossoms under the Full Moon will be presented in their original style, while other works such as Cantonese Medley, Qing Dynasty Bossa Nova: Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon, and Moonlight in the City will be rearranged by talented young local composers Wang Chenwei, Sulwyn Lok, and Tan Kah Yong. Join us for an evening of riddles and music!
